Children foundations

Supporting your child, naturally

Where to start when you want to do this properly

Supporting your child's health can feel like a moving target. Their needs are constantly shifting, and what worked at one stage may not at another. Children's nutritional needs aren't simply smaller versions of adult requirements; they're distinct, rapidly developing, and often harder to meet through diet alone, even when you're doing everything right.

If you're trying to support your child proactively, or you're navigating symptoms that feel persistent and unexplained, this is a good place to start. Our practitioners take a whole-child approach to paediatric Naturopathic and Homeopathic care, looking at what your child actually needs rather than working from a generic checklist of children's health supplements.

Who we work with

This might be for you if…

Your child is a selective eater and you worry about gaps

You're doing your best with the foods your child will accept, but the variety isn't there and you're not sure whether the basics are being covered. We can help you understand which nutrients are most likely affected by your child's eating pattern, and how to support what's missing without turning every mealtime into a battle.

Your child gets sick often and takes longer than others to recover

Frequent illness in childhood is normal, particularly through early childcare years. But if your child is consistently unwell, taking weeks to bounce back, or experiencing complications you're not seeing in other children, there may be a nutritional or gut health picture worth exploring rather than simply waiting it out.

You've noticed shifts in mood, energy or focus you can't explain

When something has changed and you can't quite put your finger on why, it's worth looking deeper. Mood, behaviour, energy and concentration in children are often influenced by nutrient status, gut health and sleep quality, and identifying the underlying drivers can be more useful than treating each symptom individually.

Your child has been on antibiotics and you want to support recovery

A course of antibiotics can affect your child's microbiome and digestion in ways that may take time to settle. We can help you support [LINK: gut and immune recovery] during and after antibiotic use, with age-appropriate probiotics, dietary support and follow-up care so your child can rebuild from a strong foundation.

You're unsure which supplements are right for your child's age

There's a lot of children's products on the market and it's not always clear what's appropriate, what's needed, or what's overkill. We can help you cut through the noise and identify what matters for your child's specific age, stage and circumstances, rather than working from a generic checklist.

You'd rather support your child proactively than wait for problems

Many of the parents we work with come to us before there's a crisis. They want to lay good foundations during periods of growth and change, and to understand what their child actually needs at each stage. Proactive support during childhood is one of the most worthwhile investments in long-term health.

What working with us might look like

Whether you're starting with a clear concern or simply want to support your child proactively, our process is built around understanding your child's specific picture before we recommend anything. Here's what working with us tends to look like, in four steps.

A discovery call

A free, 15-minute conversation with our clinical team. No pressure, no expectation, just a chance to talk through what's going on with your child, what you've already tried, and whether we're the right fit for what you need next.

An initial consultation

A thorough, whole-picture session. We look at your child's health history, current concerns, diet, gut function, sleep, mood and family context, alongside any investigations your medical team has carried out. We work to understand your child's specific picture rather than apply a generic protocol.

A plan that fits your family

A tailored plan built around your child's priorities and what their body actually needs. This may include Naturopathic care, herbal medicine, Homeopathic remedies, age-appropriate products, and sensible food and lifestyle adjustments you can actually follow.

On-going support and follow-up

Children change quickly, and so do their needs. Follow-up consultations help us refine the plan as your child responds and grows, and we work alongside your GP or paediatrician where further investigation may be helpful. The goal is steady, supported progress, not endless appointments.

What children's nutrition actually involves

The first two decades of life involve significant growth and development, with nutritional demands that are disproportionately high relative to body weight. The brain, immune system, gut microbiome, skeletal system and endocrine system all develop rapidly during this time, and nutritional gaps during these windows may have broader implications for ongoing health.

Iron, zinc, vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium and iodine are among the nutrients commonly identified as insufficient in Australian children's diets. Standard eating patterns often fall short even when food quality looks reasonable, and children with selective eating, low fish intake, or limited sun exposure may be more affected.

Children also aren't passive recipients of nutrition. Gut function, microbiome composition, stress, sleep and environmental exposures all influence how nutrients are absorbed and used. Looking at the whole picture matters more than focusing on what's on the plate alone.

A clinical-first approach to children's health

Our approach to care is grounded in our practitioners' clinical training and shaped by what we see in families every day. We don't guess with supplements, and we don't apply generic protocols. We work with your child's age, stage, history and current concerns to identify what may genuinely help.

  • Foundational nutrients including vitamin D, omega-3, zinc, magnesium and iron, areas commonly identified as insufficient in Australian children's diets
  • Gut and microbiome support, which underpins immune development, nutrient absorption and overall resilience in children
  • Immune support relevant to both day-to-day resilience and the recovery period after illness
  • Brain and nervous system foundations including DHA, magnesium and B vitamins, which support cognitive function in childhood
  • Growth and development support across the nutritional building blocks for bone, muscle and neurological development
NOT SURE WHERE TO START

If you're feeling overwhelmed by the volume of information out there on children's supplements, or you'd rather not work through trial and error on your own, our practitioners can help. A discovery call is a free, no-pressure way to talk through your child's situation and figure out what would actually be useful, before you spend on anything.

Common questions about naturopathic support

To help you feel clearer about your next steps

Do children really need supplements if they eat a balanced diet?

A varied diet is the best foundation for children's nutrition, but in practice many Australian children fall short of optimal intake for at least some key nutrients. Vitamin D status is often suboptimal regardless of diet due to sun avoidance and indoor time. Omega-3 fatty acids require regular oily fish, which many children don't eat. Iron, zinc and iodine are also commonly insufficient, particularly in children with selective eating or low meat intake. Targeted support to address specific gaps may be appropriate for many children.

What is the most important supplement for children?

Vitamin D and omega-3 DHA are two of the most consistently relevant children's health supplements across age groups, given how difficult both are to obtain reliably from diet and sun exposure alone in Australia. Beyond these, what else is useful depends on your child's individual diet, gut health and history. There's no universal answer, and a tailored approach generally produces better results than a one-size-fits-all multivitamin.

Are children’s supplements safe?

Supplements that are appropriate for your child's age and correctly dosed are safe for the vast majority of children. Age-appropriate dosing matters, and products specifically formulated for children are preferable to divided adult doses. If your child has a medical condition, takes medication or has dietary restrictions, it's worth checking with a health practitioner before introducing new supplements.

How do I get my child to take supplements?

Form matters. Liquids, drops, chewable tablets and powders that mix into food are usually the most practical for younger children. Taste matters too, and products formulated for children tend to manage this better than adult formulations. Building the supplement into a normal daily routine alongside meals, and choosing a flavour your child accepts, goes a long way toward consistent use.

At what age can children start taking supplements?

It depends on the supplement and form. Vitamin D drops are commonly used from birth and often recommended for breastfed infants. Omega-3 liquids or drops are suitable from early infancy. Probiotics in infant formulations are appropriate from birth. Zinc, magnesium and other targeted supplements are generally suitable from toddlerhood in age-appropriate forms. Gummies and chewables are typically suited to children three years and older. Always check age guidance on individual products and ask a practitioner if you're unsure.
