IBS
A considered approach to IBS
If you have been left with the diagnosis but no clear path forward
Irritable bowel syndrome is one of the most prevalent and least satisfying diagnoses in gut health, partly because it describes a collection of symptoms rather than a defined cause. If you have been told you have IBS and left without a clear path forward, that experience is common and it does not mean there is nothing to be done. This page is a starting point for Naturopathic IBS support that works alongside your medical care.

Who we work with
You might recognise yourself here...
You have a diagnosis of IBS or longstanding mixed gut symptoms
An IBS diagnosis is the start of understanding what is happening, but it does not always tell you how to feel better day to day. Our role sits alongside your GP, considering microbiome health, gut lining, motility and the gut-brain axis. We work as part of your broader care team, not in place of any medical treatment you are receiving.
Your gut symptoms are unpredictable and affect your daily life
Symptoms that affect your ability to plan your day, travel or eat in social situations are real and common in functional gut presentations. We consider broader patterns including digestive capacity, microbiome health and the nervous system component of gut function, alongside any medical care your GP may recommend.
Stress reliably worsens your gut symptoms
The connection between stress and gut function is well established, and many people with IBS notice this clearly. The gut-brain axis is a central area of consideration in IBS care. We consider nervous system support, vagal tone and the stress response as part of a tailored plan, alongside any medical care you choose.
You have tried low FODMAP and it helps but does not resolve everything
Low FODMAP can be a useful short-term tool for symptom management. It is rarely the full picture for the underlying drivers, and long-term restriction is not generally recommended. We consider broader gut function, microbiome health and gut lining alongside any dietary considerations as part of a more sustainable plan.
You experience urgency, incomplete evacuation or unpredictable bowel habits
Changes in bowel habit, urgency or incomplete evacuation are real symptoms that affect your quality of life. Persistent or new changes warrant medical investigation as the appropriate first step. Our role is to sit alongside that pathway, considering broader patterns of gut function alongside your medical care.
Investigations have come back normal but you are managing rather than addressing
When standard investigations are clear, it is easy to feel left with no path forward. Functional gut symptoms are real and common. We consider digestive capacity, microbiome health, gut lining and the nervous system component as part of a Naturopathic approach, alongside any medical care you continue to receive.
What is happening in IBS
IBS is a functional gut disorder, meaning that the structure of the gut is normal on standard investigation but the function is not. The areas commonly considered in the literature include changes to the microbiome, gut lining integrity, low-grade gut sensitivity, altered gut-brain axis signalling, and in a significant proportion of cases, post-infectious changes that have never fully resolved.
IBS is not a single condition and is better understood as a spectrum with different dominant patterns for different people. IBS-D (diarrhoea predominant), IBS-C (constipation predominant) and IBS-M (mixed pattern) each have different underlying patterns and respond to different approaches. Diagnosis and medical management of IBS sits with your GP. Naturopathic IBS support is about working alongside that pathway, considering the broader picture of gut function and the gut-brain axis.
A clinical-first approach to IBS
At Nourishing Apothecary, our clinical team is based in Liverpool, Sydney and offers consultations online across Australia. Naturopathic IBS support works best when it is matched to your specific pattern, your history and any medical care you are receiving, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.
Support may include:
- Reviewing your symptom pattern, history and any investigations your medical team has carried out
- Considering microbiome health, areas commonly relevant in IBS
- Considering gut lining integrity and digestive capacity alongside any medical care
- Reviewing the gut-brain axis and the nervous system component of IBS
- Naturopathic care, herbal medicine and Homeopathic remedies as part of a tailored plan
- Working alongside your GP or specialist where further investigation may be helpful
Where targeted supplementation is part of your plan, our clinical Naturopaths may recommend products from our practitioner-selected IBS range, which you can also browse independently below.
IBS that affects your daily life is not something you should have to navigate on your own. Our discovery call is a free, 20-minute conversation where you can talk to our clinical team about what you have been experiencing, what you have already tried, and where Naturopathic support might sit alongside your medical care. There is no pressure and no expectation, just a chance to be heard and to understand whether we are the right fit for what you need next.
COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT IBS
To help you feel clearer about your next steps
Is IBS a real condition?
Yes. IBS is a recognised functional gut disorder with established diagnostic criteria. The fact that standard structural investigations come back normal does not mean nothing is wrong. Research has identified measurable differences in gut microbiome composition, gut sensitivity and brain-gut communication in people with IBS. It is a real condition with real underlying drivers, and your symptoms are valid.
What is the low FODMAP diet?
The low FODMAP diet is a dietary protocol that reduces certain fermentable carbohydrates in the diet. It is a recognised tool used in IBS care, typically as a short-term approach to identify food triggers, followed by a structured reintroduction phase. Long-term restriction is not generally recommended. A practitioner can help work through whether and how this approach is appropriate for you.
Can IBS be caused by a previous gut infection?
Post-infectious IBS is a recognised pattern that can develop following a gastrointestinal infection. Changes to gut function may persist long after the original infection has resolved. We consider this pattern as part of a broader Naturopathic assessment, alongside any medical care your GP recommends.
Why does stress make my IBS worse?
The gut and brain are in constant bidirectional communication via the gut-brain axis. Stress affects gut motility, gut sensitivity and the composition of the gut microbiome. In IBS, this relationship is often more pronounced, meaning stress produces a more noticeable gut response. Considering the nervous system component of IBS is a central part of how we approach Naturopathic support.
Are probiotics helpful for IBS?
Probiotics may be helpful for some IBS patterns and not others. The strain, dose and presentation matter. A practitioner can help work through whether and how probiotics are appropriate for your specific picture, alongside any medical care you are receiving.
How is IBS diagnosed?
IBS diagnosis sits with your GP or gastroenterologist. They will use established diagnostic criteria and rule out other conditions, including inflammatory bowel disease, coeliac disease and other causes. If you have not had appropriate investigations, a GP review is the appropriate first step. We work alongside that medical pathway, not in place of it.
