Microbiome support
A considered approach to microbiome health
Diversity and resilience are what make a microbiome work for you
The gut microbiome is one of the most actively researched areas of health, and for good reason. The trillions of microorganisms that populate the gut influence immunity, hormonal health, mood, metabolism, skin and broader wellbeing. Supporting a diverse, resilient microbiome is one of the most evidence-grounded things you can do for long-term health. This page is a starting point for Naturopathic microbiome support that works alongside your medical care.

Who we work with
You might recognise yourself here...
You have had antibiotics and want to actively rebuild microbiome diversity
Antibiotics are an important medical tool and they also disrupt the gut microbiome significantly. Active recovery during and after a course of antibiotics is a sensible approach. We consider microbiome diversity, gut lining health and broader nutritional foundations as part of a Naturopathic plan, alongside any medical care your GP recommends.
Your digestion has changed over time and you suspect microbiome is involved
Gradual changes in how your digestion functions can have a microbiome component, although other factors are also relevant. We consider broader gut function, microbiome diversity and the gut-brain axis alongside any medical investigation your GP may consider helpful for your specific situation.
You have been told you have dysbiosis or microbiome imbalance
A diagnosis of dysbiosis or microbiome imbalance is a starting point for understanding what is happening, not the full picture. Our role is to consider how this fits into your broader gut function and what targeted support may be relevant, alongside any medical care your GP recommends for the broader picture.
You eat well but still experience gut symptoms or low immunity
Diet is foundational, but it is not the only input the microbiome responds to. Stress, sleep, medication history, environmental exposure and broader gut function all play a role. We consider the wider picture as part of a tailored plan, alongside any medical care your GP may recommend.
You want considered guidance rather than generic supplement advice
The microbiome supplement landscape is broad, and not every product is right for every person. Naturopathic care can help build a more considered plan based on your specific picture, with attention to which forms, strains and combinations may be most relevant for what you are working with.
Microbiome support can feel hard to navigate, particularly when there is so much information and so many products to choose from. Our discovery call is a free, 20-minute conversation where you can talk to our clinical team about what you have been experiencing, what you have already tried, and where Naturopathic support might sit alongside your medical care. There is no pressure and no expectation, just a chance to be heard and to understand whether we are the right fit for what you need next.
What shapes the microbiome
The gut microbiome is shaped by a continuous interplay of diet, medication use, stress, sleep, environmental exposure and health status. Diversity, the presence of a wide range of microbial species, is a consistently important marker associated with broader gut and systemic wellbeing. Lower diversity is associated in the literature with a wide range of health concerns and tends to recover more slowly from disruptions like antibiotic use or illness.
Antibiotics are an important medical tool and are also one of the more disruptive factors for the microbiome. They are not the only driver. Chronic stress, processed dietary patterns low in fibre and fermented foods, and certain medications all affect microbiome composition over time. Building and sustaining a diverse microbiome is a long-term project, not a single-cycle intervention. We work alongside any medical care you are receiving.
A clinical-first approach to microbiome care
At Nourishing Apothecary, our clinical team is based in Liverpool, Sydney and offers consultations online across Australia. Naturopathic microbiome support works best when it is built around your specific picture, your history and your broader goals, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.
Support may include:
- Reviewing your history, current symptoms and any investigations your medical team has carried out
- Considering microbiome diversity, areas commonly considered in broader gut care
- Considering prebiotic, probiotic and dietary diversity alongside any medical care
- Reviewing post-antibiotic recovery and broader gut function where relevant
- Naturopathic care, herbal medicine and Homeopathic remedies as part of a tailored plan
- Working alongside your GP or specialist where further investigation may be helpful
Where targeted supplementation is part of your plan, our clinical Naturopaths may recommend products from our practitioner-selected microbiome range, which you can also browse independently below.
COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT MICROBIOME SUPPORT
To help you feel clearer about your next steps
What is the difference between probiotics, prebiotics and postbiotics?
Probiotics are live microorganisms that, when taken in adequate amounts, may confer a health benefit. Prebiotics are non-digestible fibres that feed beneficial gut bacteria. Postbiotics are the metabolic products of bacterial fermentation. All three have distinct but complementary roles, and the most considered microbiome support tends to incorporate elements of each rather than focusing on one alone.
How long does it take to rebuild the microbiome after antibiotics?
Recovery timeframes vary depending on the type of antibiotic, the duration of treatment and the state of the microbiome beforehand. Active support during and after the antibiotic course, including dietary diversity and targeted supplementation where appropriate, may help support faster recovery. We work alongside your medical team for the broader picture.
Are all probiotics the same?
No. Probiotics differ in the strains they contain, the quality of formulation and the clinical evidence behind specific strains for specific purposes. Strain specificity matters more than total cell counts. This is an area where practitioner guidance can help with selecting an appropriate product for your specific picture, alongside any medical care you are receiving.
What foods support a healthy microbiome?
Dietary diversity is consistently associated with microbiome diversity in the research. Eating a wide variety of plant-based foods, including vegetables, legumes, whole grains, nuts, seeds and fruits, provides the range of fibre types that different microbial species use. Fermented foods including yoghurt, kefir, kimchi, sauerkraut, miso and kombucha may also contribute. Highly processed foods and excess alcohol tend to reduce diversity.
Can the microbiome affect my immune system?
Yes. A significant portion of the immune system is located in and around the gut, and the microbiome plays a role in immune regulation. A disrupted microbiome is associated in the research with a range of immune-related concerns. Microbiome support can be one part of broader Naturopathic care, alongside any medical care you are receiving for specific health concerns.
Is microbiome testing worth doing?
Microbiome testing can provide useful information in some clinical situations and less useful information in others. Whether testing is appropriate is a decision made on a case-by-case basis, and any specific test recommendations sit with your GP. Our role is to consider what you are working with and help interpret information in context, alongside any medical care your team has provided.
Can I buy products without booking a consultation?

Every product in our microbiome range has been selected by our clinical Naturopaths, so you are welcome to shop the collection independently if you have a clear sense of what you are looking for. If you would like guidance on which products are most relevant for your specific situation, our team is available for a free discovery call or a more in-depth consultation.
Do you offer microbiome consultations online?
