Thyroid

A considered approach to thyroid health

When your thyroid diagnosis does not feel like the full picture

Most women we see with thyroid concerns already have a diagnosis, but feel their symptoms are not fully addressed. Tiredness, brain fog, weight changes, mood shifts, hair thinning and cycle irregularity often persist even when test results sit 'within range'. This page is a starting point for Naturopathic thyroid support that works alongside your medical care, not in place of it.

Who we work with

You might recognise yourself here

You have a diagnosed thyroid condition and want broader support

A thyroid diagnosis is the start of understanding what is happening, but it does not always tell you how to feel better day to day. Our role sits alongside your GP or endocrinologist, considering nutritional cofactors, immune regulation, gut health and stress. We work as part of your broader care team, not in place of any medical treatment.

Your test results are 'within range' but symptoms persist regardless

When test results are described as 'within range' but you still feel tired, foggy or unlike yourself, it is easy to feel dismissed. Symptoms that persist alongside in-range bloods are a common reason women seek Naturopathic support. We consider nutritional status, stress, gut health and broader hormonal patterns alongside your medical care.

You suspect your thyroid is not functioning at its best

If your symptoms point toward thyroid involvement but you have not yet had a thorough assessment, the appropriate first step is a GP review. We can sit alongside that pathway, considering nutritional and lifestyle factors that may be relevant, and supporting you to advocate for further investigation where appropriate.

You have unexplained cycle changes, hair thinning or temperature shifts

Cycle changes, hair thinning, dry skin and temperature shifts are symptoms that can be associated with thyroid function, but they are also influenced by other systems and the picture is rarely simple. We consider nutritional status, hormonal balance and broader health patterns, alongside any medical investigation your GP may consider helpful.

You are managing thyroid medication and want broader lifestyle support

Thyroid medication is a foundational part of managing many thyroid conditions, and we never advise stopping or adjusting it. That is a decision between you and your prescribing doctor. Our role sits alongside that medical care, considering nutritional cofactors, gut health, stress and lifestyle factors that may influence how you feel.

You have a family history of thyroid disease and want proactive support

A family history of thyroid disease can be a reason to focus on long-term wellbeing, even before any diagnosis. Naturopathic care can support nutritional foundations, gut health, immune regulation and stress, all of which influence broader thyroid wellbeing. Routine medical screening with your GP is the appropriate way to monitor thyroid function over time.

What affects thyroid function

Thyroid hormones influence almost every system in the body, including metabolism, body temperature, energy production, mood and the menstrual cycle. The thyroid is regulated by the pituitary gland through TSH, and produces two main hormones, T4 and T3, with T3 being the more biologically active form. The thyroid panel that is most appropriate for you is a decision for your GP or endocrinologist, and we work with whatever testing your medical team has carried out.

The most common thyroid condition in women is Hashimoto's thyroiditis, an autoimmune condition that gradually reduces thyroid output. Other thyroid conditions include hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, and Graves' disease, an autoimmune cause of overactive thyroid function. Diagnosis and medical management of these conditions sits with a GP or endocrinologist. Naturopathic thyroid support is about working alongside that pathway, considering nutritional cofactors, immune regulation, gut health and stress, all of which can influence broader wellbeing.

A clinical-first approach to thyroid care

At Nourishing Apothecary, our clinical team is based in Liverpool, Sydney and offers consultations online across Australia. Naturopathic thyroid support works best when it is built around your specific diagnosis, current medication and symptom picture, alongside your medical care, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

Support may include:

  • Reviewing your symptoms, history and any thyroid testing your medical team has carried out
  • Considering nutritional cofactors and gut health, areas commonly considered in thyroid care
  • Considering immune regulation, particularly relevant in autoimmune thyroid presentations
  • Supporting general wellbeing alongside your prescribed thyroid medication, never in place of it
  • Naturopathic care, herbal medicine and Homeopathic remedies as part of a tailored plan
  • Working alongside your GP or endocrinologist for an integrated approach

Where targeted supplementation is part of your plan, our clinical Naturopaths may recommend products from our practitioner-selected thyroid range, which you can also browse independently below.

Not sure where to start

Thyroid concerns can feel hard to get to the bottom of, particularly when results are 'within range' but symptoms persist, or when a diagnosis has not led to the relief you hoped for. Our discovery call is a free, 20-minute conversation where you can talk to our clinical team about what you have been experiencing, what you have already tried, and where Naturopathic support might sit alongside your medical care. There is no pressure and no expectation, just a chance to be heard and to understand whether we are the right fit for what you need next. Our Naturopaths and Homeopaths are based in Liverpool, Sydney and consult online across Australia. You can also meet our practitioners to find the right fit for you.

COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT THYROID

To help you feel clearer about your next steps

What is the difference between hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s?

Hypothyroidism describes low thyroid hormone output, regardless of cause. Hashimoto's thyroiditis is the most common underlying cause of hypothyroidism in women, and is an autoimmune condition where the immune system gradually reduces thyroid function over time. Hashimoto's is typically identified by elevated thyroid antibodies on a blood test. The distinction can matter when considering the broader picture alongside your medical care.

Can my thyroid be ‘sluggish’ even if my TSH is within range?

Some women experience persistent symptoms even when their TSH sits in the reference range. The interpretation of thyroid testing, including free T3, free T4 and antibodies, is a medical decision that sits with your GP or endocrinologist. If you feel your symptoms are not being addressed, raising this with your medical team is an appropriate first step. We can sit alongside that pathway, considering broader factors that may be relevant to how you feel.

Should I keep taking my thyroid medication if I see a Naturopath?

Yes, absolutely. Naturopathic care does not replace prescribed thyroid medication and we never advise stopping it. Any change to thyroid medication needs to be made in consultation with the prescribing doctor. Our role is to work alongside your medical care, considering nutritional and lifestyle factors that may influence how you feel day to day.

What nutrients does thyroid function rely on?

Thyroid hormone production and conversion involves a number of nutrients, including iodine, selenium, zinc, iron, vitamin A and vitamin D. Deficiency in any of these can affect thyroid function. Testing nutritional status as part of a broader thyroid assessment is something a Naturopath can support, alongside dietary and lifestyle considerations.

Can stress affect my thyroid?

Sustained stress and elevated cortisol can influence thyroid function in several ways, including the conversion of T4 to active T3. This is one reason why women sometimes report worsening thyroid-related symptoms during periods of high stress, even when medication is unchanged. Stress and adrenal support are often considered as part of broader Naturopathic care for thyroid wellbeing.

Can Naturopathy help with thyroid antibodies?

There is research interest in whether nutritional and lifestyle factors, particularly selenium, vitamin D and gut-related factors, may influence thyroid antibody levels in autoimmune thyroid disease. Outcomes vary, and Naturopathic care does not replace medical management of autoimmune thyroid conditions. We work alongside your GP or endocrinologist.
