Egg quality

Egg quality, in the months that shape it

Supporting the eggs you have

Egg quality is one of the factors that meaningfully influences both natural conception and assisted reproduction outcomes. While outcomes can never be guaranteed, there is a meaningful window in which to consider it. The three to four months before a conception attempt or egg retrieval is when that work happens, and our Naturopaths can help you make the most of that window.

Who we work with

You might recognise yourself here...

You have been told you have low ovarian reserve or low AMH

Markers like AMH and ovarian reserve describe quantity, not quality. A low result does not mean conception is not possible, and the eggs you do have can still be supported through their maturation cycle. Naturopathic care may consider areas like nutrient status, antioxidant balance and mitochondrial support, with care taken to work alongside any medical investigation you have underway.

You are preparing for IVF or egg freezing in the months ahead

The lead-up to egg retrieval is one of the most meaningful windows for supporting egg health, because eggs spend approximately three months maturing before they are released. Our Naturopaths work alongside your fertility team, focusing on areas such as nutritional foundations, antioxidant balance and overall reproductive wellbeing in the preparation period.

You are over 35 and aware that egg health may be a factor

Age-related changes in egg health are well documented, but they are not the whole story. The cellular environment in which eggs mature is also influenced by nutrition, oxidative load, inflammation and lifestyle factors. We focus on the areas that are most relevant for your individual picture, working in collaboration with any medical care you are receiving.

You have had a failed IVF cycle and want to try differently

A failed cycle can feel deeply disheartening. There are often factors worth looking at before the next attempt, including nutritional status, inflammatory load and overall preconception preparation. We work with women in the months between cycles, alongside their fertility specialist, to consider where additional support may be of value.

You have experienced recurrent miscarriage and want to look more closely

Recurrent miscarriage is rarely caused by a single factor, and the reasons can be complex. Naturopathic care may consider areas such as nutritional status, hormonal wellbeing, inflammatory load and antioxidant balance, particularly in the months between conception attempts. We work alongside your medical team and any specialist investigations underway.

You are trying to conceive and want to support egg health

Even without a known concern, the months before trying to conceive are a meaningful window for supporting egg health. Eggs spend approximately three months maturing before ovulation, and the conditions during that window can influence the cellular environment they develop in. We help you focus on the areas with the most clinical relevance for your individual picture.

What egg quality actually means

Egg quality refers to the chromosomal integrity and mitochondrial health of an egg, both of which influence whether it can fertilise successfully, divide normally and develop into a healthy embryo. Egg health is widely understood to influence fertilisation, early embryo development and miscarriage outcomes, and is one of the factors that becomes more relevant as women age. Age, however, is not the only factor. Oxidative stress, mitochondrial function, nutritional status, inflammation and hormonal signalling can all affect the cellular environment in which eggs mature.

Eggs spend the final three to four months before ovulation in a phase of development known as folliculogenesis. During this window, the cellular environment in which eggs mature is influenced by a range of factors, including nutritional and lifestyle inputs. This is the basis for the clinical approach of beginning targeted nutritional and lifestyle support at least 90 days before a planned conception attempt or egg retrieval, so the eggs maturing during that period develop in the most supportive conditions possible

What naturopathic support looks like

Supporting egg health is not about flooding the body with supplements and hoping something works. The most useful approach is targeted, based on an understanding of which factors are most likely to be relevant for an individual woman, and timed appropriately to the follicular development window. The products in this collection are naturopath-selected to address the specific cellular and nutritional drivers that influence egg health, without unnecessary duplication.

Support may include:

  • Nutritional support relevant to mitochondrial health, an area of focus in egg development research
  • Antioxidant support relevant to oxidative stress, which is recognised in the research literature on egg health
  • Nutritional support for the hormonal environment relevant to follicular development
  • Nutritional support for inflammatory balance, relevant to those navigating endometriosis or elevated inflammatory markers
  • Nutritional foundations including consideration of folate, vitamin D, CoQ10 or ubiquinol, zinc and omega-3 fatty acids based on your individual picture
Not sure where to start

Egg health support is most useful when it is timed correctly and specific to you situation, particularly if you are preparing for IVF or have a known concern such as AMH or previous poor response. Our clinical team can help you map out the most relevant approach for where you are right now. Our Naturopaths are based in Liverpool, Sydney and offer consultations online across Australia.

The questions that come up most

To help you feel clearer about your next steps

Can egg quality be supported?

Egg quality is influenced by the cellular environment during the months in which eggs are maturing. Nutritional status, antioxidant balance, mitochondrial function and inflammatory markers are all considered as part of a naturopathic egg health approach. While outcomes cannot be guaranteed, beginning targeted nutritional and lifestyle support around 90 days before a planned conception attempt or egg retrieval is a recognised clinical approach. A practitioner can help identify which areas are most relevant for your specific picture.

How long before trying to conceive should I start supporting egg health?

Because eggs spend approximately 90 to 120 days maturing before ovulation, any nutritional or lifestyle support needs to be in place for at least that long to have relevance to the eggs that will be released or retrieved. Beginning targeted support at least three months before a planned conception attempt or IVF cycle is the standard clinical recommendation. Support started within a few weeks of a procedure is unlikely to influence eggs already well into their maturation phase.

What is CoQ10 and why is it used in preconception support?

CoQ10, including its converted form ubiquinol, is a nutrient involved in mitochondrial energy production. Mitochondrial function is one of the cellular factors considered in research on fertilisation and early embryo development. CoQ10 levels naturally change with age, and it is one of the nutrients commonly considered in preconception nutritional planning. Dosing and form both matter, which is why a practitioner consultation is the most useful starting point.

Does low AMH mean poor egg quality?

No. AMH reflects the quantity of remaining follicles, not the quality of the eggs within them. A woman with low AMH may still produce healthy eggs, and conversely, a woman with a normal AMH result can have quality concerns. The two measures are independent, though both are relevant to the overall fertility picture. Where AMH is low, the quality of available eggs becomes a higher priority, and targeted nutritional support may be a reasonable area of focus.

Is age the main factor affecting egg quality?

Age is the most consistent and significant factor, as natural changes in mitochondrial function and oxidative load over time can influence the cellular environment in which eggs mature. However, age is not the only driver. Nutritional deficiency, oxidative stress, inflammation, endometriosis, thyroid dysfunction and lifestyle habits all affect the cellular environment in which eggs develop, independently of age. Identifying the modifiable factors that are relevant to your individual picture is the focus of naturopathic egg health support.

Should I take egg quality supplements alongside IVF medication?

Many women preparing for IVF choose to support their nutritional status in the months before their cycle, and this is something worth discussing with both your fertility specialist and a naturopath. Some supplements are appropriate alongside IVF protocols, while others may need to be paused at certain phases of treatment, particularly during stimulation or after transfer. It is important that your treating team is aware of everything you are taking. A naturopath experienced in fertility and IVF support can help you navigate this carefully and in coordination with your clinic.

What lifestyle factors influence egg health?

Sleep, stress, alcohol, smoking, environmental toxin exposure and physical activity have all been studied in relation to egg health, alongside nutritional status. The most useful approach is identifying which factors are most relevant to your individual picture, rather than trying to address everything at once. We help clients prioritise the areas most likely to make a meaningful difference.

Can I buy these products without a consultation?

Yes. The products featured on this page are available to purchase directly through our online shop, and you do not need to have had a consultation with us to order them. That said, the right egg health support varies from person to person, and what works well for one body may not be the best starting point for another. If you would like guidance on which products are most relevant to your individual circumstances, a discovery call or initial consultation is the most useful starting point.
