Is It Really Menopause — Or Is Insulin Resistance Making It Worse?

If you've been told that the weight gain, exhaustion, brain fog, broken sleep, and low mood are just part of perimenopause and menopause — and that you simply have to manage it — I want you to read this carefully.

Because for many women, what looks like peri or menopause is actually being made significantly worse by something else entirely: insulin resistance. And that's a very different thing, because insulin resistance is something you can address.

WHAT'S ACTUALLY HAPPENING IN YOUR BODY?

Most women know that perimenopause and menopause involves a decline in oestrogen and progesterone. What most women don't know is that oestrogen plays a critical role in how sensitive your cells are to insulin.

When oestrogen begins to drop — even in perimenopause, years before your periods stop — your body's ability to regulate blood sugar becomes less efficient. You start to need more insulin just to keep your blood sugar stable.

At the same time, life in your 40s and 50s tends to compound things: more stress, less sleep, a natural loss of muscle mass, and decades of dietary habits that weren't designed to support metabolic health.

The result? Chronically elevated insulin.

And insulin, at its core, is a storage hormone. When it's elevated more often than it should be, it drives fat storage (particularly around the middle), fuels inflammation, disrupts sleep, affects mood, and interferes with how every other hormone in your body communicates.

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF INSULIN RESISTANCE IS PART OF YOUR PICTURE?

These are the signs to look for — many of which women have never connected to blood sugar:

• Constant hunger or "food noise" — a persistent mental preoccupation with food that doesn't settle between meals

• Energy crashes between meals, shakiness, or feeling irritable when you haven't eaten (reactive hypoglycemia)

• Blood pressure that has crept up in recent years

• Skin tags appearing, particularly around the neck, underarms or chest

• Darkened skin in skin folds or creases — a sign called acanthosis nigricans

• Weight sitting mainly around your waist — a waist measurement over 85cm, or a waist-to-height ratio above 0.5

If several of these sound familiar, insulin resistance may be a significant driver of what you're experiencing.

THIS IS WHY NOTHING IS WORKING

It's why the diet that worked for you at 35 does nothing now.

It's why you can eat "perfectly" and still not shift the weight.

It's why you wake up exhausted despite going to bed early.

It's why you feel hungry and unsatisfied at the same time.

It's why your mood is flat, your mind is foggy, and your energy crashes in the afternoon.

And it's why, even if you've tried hormone therapy or supplements, you might still not feel quite right — because if the metabolic foundation is unstable, hormones can't behave the way they should.

THE GOOD NEWS: THIS IS CHANGEABLE

Your body isn't declining. It's struggling to regulate energy — and that means there's something you can actually do.

When you stabilise insulin — with the right food, the right testing, and a targeted support plan — things start to shift.

Energy becomes more consistent. The constant hunger and food noise settle. The weight starts to reorganise. Inflammation reduces. Sleep improves. Your mind clears.

You start to feel like yourself again.

WHERE TO START

At Nourishing Apothecary, we take a functional approach to perimenopause and menopause — which means we don't just treat the symptoms you can see. We look at what's driving them.

That includes:

• A personalised nutrition plan focused on blood sugar stability, not calorie restriction

• Targeted herbal and nutritional supplementation based on your specific picture

• Sleep and stress support, because cortisol directly impacts insulin — you can't fix one without addressing the other
